The United States Secret Service confirmed Wednesday it was investigating the reported hacking of Mitt Romney's email account, the day after Romney's campaign said authorities were looking into the matter.

Romney's presidential campaign on Tuesday acknowledged an investigation into the hacking of an old email account which has was identified as belonging to the former governor by documents published by The Wall Street Journal.

"The proper authorities are investigating this crime and we will have no further comment on it," Romney campaign communications director Gail Gitcho said in an e-mailed statement.

The website Gawker said Tuesday afternoon that it had received a password to a Hotmail email account which was identified in emails published by the Journal as Romney's, dating to back to his days as governor of Massachusetts.

A post on the website said the account password was emailed to them, and they did not log in to the email account.

Romney has been known to guard his electronic footprint closely, as he and aides purchased work computers on their way out of the governor's office in 2007.
