Shreveport Police Officer Michael Schulz is patrolling the streets tonight in the department's giant prisoner transport van. He has to because his take home patrol car is out of commission due to exhaust problems.
Schulz's cruiser is just one of many in the shop that's left the police department running extremely low on cars.
Administrators say there are several reasons for the car shortage. The main one is the heat. Every summer, police see an increase in the number of cars that overheat and air conditioners that go out.
Another reason for the shortage is accidents. So far this year, the department's had several. With no new cars coming in, once one is totalled, it's gone for good.

Why doesn't the police department pull take home cars from the police officers that are not on patrol, so that the police that are on patrol can have a car.

Go through several apartments and you will find several police cars. The police that live there have the car parked for several days. Summer Tree has 3. Cheif Whithorn needs to clean up his own backyard before he can clean up the city.
