I'm Emily Walker, Registered Dietitian.  Our Lifelink Tip of the Week is to build better sandwiches and salads during the summer months.
When it's hot, we tend to go for cooler type foods. So with your sandwiches, always start with a whole grain bread, pita, roll or bagel. Then chose a lean meat. Generally ham, turkey, roast beef or even chicken are good choices on meat. Always make sure you're going light on cheese and mayo. Use fat free condiments like mustard and load your sandwiches up with whatever vegetables you like.
When building your salads you want to start with a healthy base. Pile your salad high with as many vegetables as you would like. The greener the better. When you're talking green go for spinach or other lettuce like romaine. Use any other vegetables from your local farmers market or from your grocery store.
Go light on the topping- bacon bits, cheeses even the dressings. Make your buying a light instead of a creamy rich sauce, because then you're going to load up the fat and it's not going to be as friendly to your waistline.
So keep in mind all food can fit in moderation just make sure you're choosing smaller portions.
