Home Health 101
To qualify for Home Health, one must be home bound (normal inability to leave the home, taxing effort to leave the home, psychiatric condition which hinders the patient from leaving home). A physician must order the services (medical doctor, osteopath, podiatrist, and psychiatrist). They need intermittent care (meaning they don't require nursing 24/7) and they must have a skilled service need. This includes medically necessary services that are considered reasonable for the treatment of a patient's illness or injury. The services must be such that they can only be provided by a RN, LPN (under direct supervision of an RN), PT, ST, or OT. To the patient with Medicare, it costs zero to have home health. This means no out of pocket fees or co-payments. A patient has the right to choose their home health. Home Health agencies must by certified by Medicare. The patient's choice should be honored by the doctor, hospital discharge planner, or other referring agency. Although the patient has a say in which agency to use, the choice may be limited by agency availability, or by insurance coverage. A patient has the right to know if a home health agency is recommended by their hospital discharge planner, doctor, or social worker. For more research: www.medicare.gov.
