Morality Of Vitter's GOP Challenger Questioned

An article in the Monroe newspaper questions whether Chet Traylor, the GOP challenger to Sen. David Vitter, can claim the moral high ground in the race.

The article says Traylor, who is a former state supreme court justice, is involved in his second questionable romantic relationship. It also says Traylor is being sued by his stepsons over his resistance to provide information on the estate of their dead mother.

The News Star quotes Traylor as saying, "I've done nothing I'm ashamed of."

Efforts by KTBS 3 News to reach Traylor for comment have been unsuccessful.

Asked if the article is problem for the campaign, Traylor's campaign manager, Lev Dawson, says, "I don't think so. It's the proverbial 20-minute story. He hasn't done anything wrong."

As to Traylor's current relationship with the estranged wife of one of his stepsons, Dawson says, "She's a an adult woman in her forties. She can choose to have a relationship with whomever she wants."

After his entry into the race, Traylor said that Vitter's entanglement in the D.C. Madam scandal, and his continued employment of an aide accused of attacking a girlfriend with a knife, make the incumbent Senator vulnerable to Democrats.
