Size of Wooley Signs Challenged In Court
A Shreveport attorney went to court Thursday to try to force mayoral candidate Bryan Wooley to taken down oversize campaign signs.Attorney John Settle said Wooley is flaunting city ordinance by cutting signs into sections to keep them within size limitations. It's a transparent end-run to get around the law, Settle said."We need to stop the proliferation of oversized political signs, which I believe violate the city ordinance," Settle said of the lawsuit, which names the city and Wooley as defendants. "I'm asking the judge to interpret the ordinance specifically as it applies to the split signs Wooley has."Early in the campaign when Wooley was questioned about the size of his signs, he said that his campaign had taken care of the issue. Many of Wooley’s questionable signs are now sliced into two panels. He would not comment on the issue this week.Caddo District Judge Roy Brun has scheduled a hearing for Friday, Sept. 10. The mayor's election is Oct. 2. City ordinance limits the size of campaign signs to prevent visual clutter. Settle's lawsuit said the city isn't enforcing the sign ordinance. An oversize sign supporting Mayor Cedric Glover was found Thursday outside a house in the Pierremont Hills area of the city. Glover's campaign took it down when they got word of it, a spokeswoman said. Settle said Wooley was served notice of the lawsuit during a campaign event Thursday night.
