Sheriff urges citizens to check out fundraisers before donating

Caddo Sheriff Steve Prator said if you are supporting a law enforcement fundraiser, make sure you know where your money is going.

Prator said several citizens have called his office and said they've received phone calls from telephone solicitors asking for donations for Sheriff's Safety Town and other law enforcement programs.

Prator said while there is a law enforcement fundraiser currently going on in this area, neither the Caddo Sheriff's Office nor Sheriff's Safety Town will ever be involved in telephone solicitations.

"We do not employ telephone solicitors, and you will never get a random phone call from us asking for money. If you are contacted, please make sure you know where your money is going before you give," Prator said.

I-20 in East Texas closed for an extra night

Eastbound lanes of Interstate 20 will be closed south of Marshall for an extra night (Thursday) this week as repair work on the Rosborough Springs Road overpass that was struck earlier this month by an oversized load.

Crews have closed the highway three previous nights this week, but have a little more work to complete the repairs. Work is being conducted at night to have the least amount of effect on traffic.

Interstate 20 eastbound lanes will be closed at night on Thursday, March 18. The closure will begin about 8:30 p.m. and is scheduled to be open back up as soon as work is completed.

Interstate 20 eastbound traffic will be detoured off at State Highway 43 (Pine Crest Drive) up to US 59 (East End Boulevard) and back south to Interstate 20.

An oversized load eastbound on Interstate 20 struck and damaged the Rosborough Springs Road overpass on March 1. Rosborough Springs Road remains open to one lane with portable traffic signals directing traffic over I-20 until repairs to the structure are completed.

Brees memoir to be published in summer

A memoir by New Orleans Saints quarterback Drew Brees will be going on sale the week before Gov. Bobby Jindal's autobiography.

Tyndale House Publishers -- a Christian publisher that added inspirational and motivational sports stories to its mix in 2007 -- announced Wednesday that it plans to release Brees' memoir on July
6.

The publisher says "Coming Back Stronger: Unleashing the Hidden Power of Adversity" will describe three comebacks: Brees' from a shoulder injury; the team's Super Bowl victory after decades of futility, and New Orleans' recovery after Hurricane Katrina.

It will be written with Chris Fabry, who collaborated with Ohio State coach Jim Tressel on "The Winners Manual."

Jindal's book is scheduled for release July 12. He announced the contract last April.

Parents leave infant in oven overnight

A Kentucky man high on marijuana and drunk on whiskey put his 5-week-old son in the oven Sunday and left him there overnight, police said.

The oven door was slightly ajar, and the oven was not turned on.

After smoking marijuana at the restaurant where he works as a cook, Larry Long, 33, returned home to share a fifth of whiskey with the baby's mother, Brandy Hatton, McCracken County Sheriff Jon Hayden said in a statement.

Hatton had four or five shots and went to bed while Long finished the bottle, Hayden said. At 5:30 the next morning, Hatton awoke to the sound of the baby's cries coming from the oven. He had been in it for several hours, police said.

Emergency crews responding to the scene transported the infant to a local hospital, where he was found to be unharmed.

The incident was reported to authorities by a psychiatric facility that Long turned to when he learned what he had done, officials said. "He actually called a mental health crisis line immediately thereafter and told them that he had done this. And they contacted us," Hayden said.

Police arrested Long and charged him with first-degree wanton endangerment. He is being held on bail of $10,000.

Long blamed his actions on the marijuana, which he believes was laced with a hallucinatory agent, officials said.

Authorities have removed the baby from its mother's care and awarded emergency custody to members of her family.

Saints coach suing former player

New Orleans Saints head coach Sean Payton and his wife are suing the team's former long snapper, Kevin Houser, over a $144,000 investment tied to a now-defunct movie studio.

The federal suit is similar to one filed earlier by Saints tight end Jeremy Shockey and former defensive lineman Charles Grant against Houser, now with the Seattle Seahawks.

State officials say Wayne Read, the CEO of the bankrupt Louisiana Film Studios LLC, never applied for the credits and the money was never returned to investors.

The Paytons' suit, which does not name Read as a defendant, says the couple paid Houser, a licensed securities dealer, $144,000 in late 2008 for what they thought would be $180,000 in state tax credits.

'Growing Pains' producer in prison on child porn charges

An executive producer for the 1980s sit-com, "Growing Pains," has been sentenced to 7 1/2 years in prison on one count of distribution of child pornography.

Steven Marshall was arrested April 15 on charges of distribution and possession of child pornography. Marshall pleaded guilty to one count of distribution of child pornography and the possession charge was dropped.

The minimum sentence for the distribution charge is five years in prison, but U.S. District Judge J. Leon Holmes said Tuesday Marshall was sentenced to an additional 2 1/2 years because of the nature of the pictures and language used in chat rooms.

Authorities say he engaged in sending and receiving child pornography and participated in online chats detailing child abduction, bondage, rapes and murders.
