Even though they've been playing well and winning often, the Tampa Bay Rays don't feel that they've gotten many breaks, what with all the injuries and tough scheduling.

They got a big one Wednesday, as Seattle Mariners center fielder Michael Saunders knocked Luke Scott's fly ball over the fence as he tried to catch it, providing the decisive run in a 5-4 Tampa Bay victory.

"We got a little bit of an assist," Rays manager Joe Maddon said. "You need that kind of break once in a while."

Scott was definitely "living right," as he joked. Earlier, he hit a popup that struck a wire hanging from a Tropicana Field catwalk and dropped between two Mariners for a single that also led to a run.

"Got a little help," Scott said. "You take it."

The Rays, despite playing without center fielder B.J. Upton for the season's first two weeks, and without closer Kyle Farnsworth throughout, have now lost third baseman Evan Longoria for two months. Even so, they ended the night sharing the best record in the majors with the Dodgers and Rangers at 17-8.

"Sounds pretty good," Maddon said.
