Local lawmaker's insurance proposal headed to House

Posted: Updated:

A bill inspired by a "3 Investigates" report is on its way to the Louisiana House.

The bill by Bossier Rep. Henry Burns would require law enforcement officers to check the validity of a driver's insurance.

Right now, the law only requires officers to verify that the driver has a valid insurance ID card.

This legislation requires officers to check the state's insurance database, but it only applies to officers who have the capability to do so.

That would include those with computers in their cruisers or in touch with a dispatcher.

Burns told lawmakers this will be a wake up call that the state is taking a more pro-active approach to those without valid insurance.
