School Choice

Posted: Updated:

The word "choice" comes in a number of different forms when it comes to education. From vouchers, to magnet schools, to charter schools and there are even choices when it comes to certain courses. A number of area students are taking advantage of the classes that can help prepare them for life after high school. One of those students is Samantha Parker who will be a senior next year in Caddo Parish. Parker told KTBS 3 News that she not quite sure what she wants to do after high school.

"I plan to go to ULM and go into nursing but I haven't made up my mind for sure on what I really want to do" says Parker.

Parker is currently in Casey Habich's class at Caddo Career and Technology Center. Habich teaches a digital media class and is showing Parker and her fellow classmates what the class can offer them during the next school year.

"Many of our students have the chance to come here for two years and the goal is that by the time they leave here, they will have a strong set of working skills" says Habich.

The school works in conjunction with the students' home high school and they can start attending the center starting during their tenth grade year. A few of the classes that principal Richard Dezendorf says the school offers are dental classes, welding, carpentry and even a class that teaches kids how to be teachers. Dezendorf says that this is the place where everything that students have learned, often starts to make sense.

"What I like about this place is that we give students a reason to learn what they are learning at their home school. When they come here they see that if they want to go into things like mechanics, they have to have math skills" says Dezendorf.

To sign up for courses at the center, students can go through their school counselor at their high school.
