Police: Teen safe following abduction

Posted: Updated:
MOUNT PLEASANT, Tx. -

The search is over for a 14-year-old East Texas girl who was allegedly kidnapped by a man identified as her ex-boyfriend.

Authorities say a man, identified as 23-year-old Jesus Ramirez, was captured around 3 p.m. Monday and Ruby Zavala is safe.

Police say around noon Monday workers from the Luminate mines spotted the pair walking on the railroad tracks on the mine property.

Law enforcement officials set up a perimeter on County Road 2500 and search teams walked through the woods looking for the suspect and victim. They say both were found deep in the woods.

According to Mount Pleasant Police Chief Wayne Isbell, Ramirez abducted Zavala with a knife, her younger sister and their mother Sunday from a church parking lot.

The mother and sister were later freed.

A vehicle allegedly used in the abduction was found wrecked near Mount Pleasant. Police say it was the same area were the Ramirez and Zavala were later found.

"We were concerned about the victims safety," said Isbell. "We're extremely lucky that this girl, who was alone with him, was not severely injured."

Isbell said Ramirez was charged with sexual assault of a child after the girl's family learned the two had a relationship and forced them to break up.

Police say Ramirez had posted bond on the sexual assault charge, but was committed to a state mental institution. He had recently been released.

Chief Isbell told reporters that the school district police had been asked by the family to keep an eye on Ruby due to the threat posed by Ramirez.

Ramirez is now facing additional charges of aggravated assault and three counts of kidnapping.

Zavala was transported to Titus County Regional Medical Center for severe dehydration and other non-life threatening injuries.

Authorities say the Zavala's family was very excited to know their daughter is safe.
