Several families displaced following fire at apartment complex

Posted: Updated:

Nearly 20 people are without a home, after a fire damages several apartment units in Mount Pleasant, Texas.

Fire officials say it happened Sunday night at the Pine Ridge Apartments on Lakewood Drive.

Amanda Nettles says her apartment unit received some of the worst damage.

After she and her boyfriend escaped the fire, they immediately started alerting the neighbors.

Fire Chief Larry McRae says it took them about 15 minutes to get the fire under control.

"When we arrived on scene, there was fire showing from the bottom of an apartment, which it extended to a second floor apartment which had also extended to an attic," said McRae.

There were about 50 firefighters from the Mt. Pleasant area that responded to the scene.

Fire officials say there were about four units that were completely destroyed by the fire.

The other units received heavy smoke and water damage.

The cause of the fire is still under investigation.

No one was injured in the fire.

The Red Cross for the Northeast Texas area has stepped in to help nine families displaced by the fire.

Volunteers are helping the families with food, clothing and shelter.

The families were all given vouchers to stay at the Days Inn for three nights.
