Kidnapping suspect appears in court

MOUNT PLEASANT, Tx. -

A Mount Pleasant, Texas girl continues to recover in a East Texas hospital, while the man accused of kidnapping her faces a laundry list of charges.

Jesus Ramirez, 23, was in court Tuesday accused of three counts of aggravated kidnapping, aggravated robbery, and aggravated sexual assault of a child. His bond was denied.

Police Chief Wayne Isbell says Ruby Zavala, her mother and sister were forced at knife-point into their vehicle in front of the St. Michael Catholic Church Sunday.

The 14-year old girl was missing for a little more than 24 hours before she and Ramirez, the man authorities said had become obsessed with her, were found by authorities Monday.

Zavala was a 7th grader at Mount Pleasant Junior High.

School officials say the Zavala family had asked them to watch out for her, after Ramirez was released for a mental hospital a couple of weeks ago.

"There was a great deal of concern," said Lynn Dehart, Mount Pleasant ISD Superintendent. "Everyone was very excited when it ended as quickly as it did."

According to the Titus County Sheriff's Office, Ramirez, who at one time had a secret relationship with Ruby, has an arrest history dating back to 2007.

The charges against him have included assault, aggravated assault with a deadly weapon, family violence and sexual assault.
