Over the counter high?

Posted: Updated:

You may have never heard of dextromethorphan, but it may be in your medicine cabinet right now. The FDA-approved non-addictive cough suppressant is used by millions but often abused by teenagers for its euphoric effect.

When consumed in higher amounts- much more than the recommended dosage- dextromethorphan makes a person sluggish and tired. It eventually mimics the effects of alcohol before- in extreme cases- the user experiences hallucinations.

House Bill 82 fights back against the dextromethorphan binge. It prohibits the sale of DM products to anyone under 18. It limits the amount that can be sold to adults- 3 grams in 30 days without a prescription. HB 82 also provides penalties for any unlawful possession.
