Debate On Campus Guns Bill Delayed

Louisiana State Rep. Ernest Wooton has delayed debate on his legislation to allow permit holders to carry concealed weapons on college campuses. Wooton talked for almost 15 minutes Monday before calling off debate and giving notice he would bring his bill back for debate in two weeks. University presidents, student government associations and campus security officers across the state have lobbied lawmakers to kill the bill. A letter signed by LSU Athletic Director Skip Bertman and all coaches and sent to each legislator warned that it would make recruiting athletes difficult because most parents would not want their children attending a school that allowed guns in classrooms and at sporting events.   Supporters of the bill said allowing guns on campus in the right hands could possibly stop shooting rampages like one at a Baton Rouge vocational school and Virginia Tech.
