Worst Syphilis Outbreak In 60 Years

Another syphilis outbreak in the Texarkana area has health officials taking action. Bowie County health officials say the increase started about this time last year, but it's now considered one of the worst outbreaks they've seen since the 1940's. Officials with the bowie county health center say texarkana is having one the highest levels of syphilis outbreaks in the state of Texas. Sores and even rashes are usually the first signs you could have the disease. Experts say it's a bacterial infection and can lead to blindness, dementia and even death if not treated. Julie Ryan works for the texas department of state health services. She says syphilis isn't targeting a specific age group. Anyone who has had unprotected sex and sex with multiple partners should be tested. Test results on syphilis usually take about three days to process. Ryan says once someone is tested positive they can begin treatment immediatley.
