Headstart partners with Texarkana, Texas ISD

Posted: Updated:

While federal cuts have hit many Headstart programs across the U.S., the program in Texarkana, Texas is actually adding more children to their Fall enrollment.
Texarkana, Texas ISD will be partnering with the federally funded program to realign some campuses and blend some their teaching methods.

Starting this Fall, the Headstart building on Capp Street will close and all their staff and students will be moved to the TISD Dunbar campus.

Texarkana, Texas ISD Superintendent Paul Norton says they'll be realigning three elementary schools and increasing their partnership with Headstart.

He says the Dunbar Elementary campus will dissolve and become an Early Childhood Education Center.

"Between the two working together we can have close to 100 kids that are provided a pre-k education that they would not have been provided previously," said Norton.

Head start is a federal education, health and nutrition program that serves children between the ages of 3 and 5 from low income families.

While some Headstart programs across the country are scaling back due to federal cuts, Texarkana Headstart Executive Director Dan Boyd says the partnership with TISD allows them to serve more children.

Headstart has to serve a certain amount of children with their funding and boyd say this Fall they'll be able to do so with fewer facilities.

He says both entities will actually benefit from the partnership.

"When we blend classes with the independent school districts we double the amount of money they can get because we double the amount of children they can reach," said Boyd.

As part of the realignment, TISD officials say Westlawn Elementary school will be grades 3rd through 5th and Theron Jones Elementary school will be kindergarten through 2nd grade.
