Louisiana's hurricane sales tax holiday this weekend

SHREVEPORT, La. -

Louisiana's annual hurricane sales tax holiday is this weekend.

The state's 4% sales tax is waived on hurricane supplies.  

Local sales taxes are still added to the purchase.

 Items that are eligible for the tax free weekend are:

-portable self-powered light source

-portable self powered radio, two way radio or weather band radio

-tarps or other flexible waterproof sheeting

-any ground anchor system or tie down kit

-any gas or diesel fuel tank

-batteries, excluding automobile and boat batteries

-any cell phone battery or charger

-any non electric food storage cooler

-any portable generator used to provide light or communications or preserve food in the event of a power outage

-any storm shutter device

-any carbon monoxide detector

-any blue ice product.

There is a $1500 limit per item.

Local Louisiana Department of Revenue officials believe Northwest Louisiana residents will take advantage of the tax free weekend, especially after two weeks of severe weather.

Hurricane season starts on June 1st.
