Caddo Deputies return from Moore, OK

Posted: Updated:
SHREVEPORT, La. -

Sgt. John May and Lt. Jay Long are back at the Caddo Parish Sheriff's Office after two days helping out in Moore, Oklahoma.

"It's amazing to see the destructive power of what went through there," May says. "I've never seen anything like that."

After a full shift Monday, the partners drove six hours overnight and began work immediately after their arrival.

They controlled traffic and enforced the perimeter, limiting access to emergency crews and utility workers. Their help freed up the local police for bigger tasks.

"It was nice to know that with us doing the minimal work, they were able to take care of the important stuff," May says.

May and Long say they were a small part of the hundreds of first responders who rushed to Oklahoma, proof that the badge unites them in a brotherhood.

"A lot of them were just responding," May says. "It was just an overwhelming response from officers and firemen."

The partners worked long hours with little relief. They faced national TV cameras, constantly changing weather conditions, and the people of Moore.

"We were there to help them and it was like they were trying to help us help them," May says.

A whirlwind 48 hour later, the deputies are back in Shreveport while the clean up continues for weeks and months to come.
