Click it or ticket

Area law enforcement officers will be out in full force this memorial day weekend.

On Monday, May 20, the Bossier City Police Department held one of their many checkpoints which resulted in officers issuing eleven citations for seat belt violations and one citation for no child safety restraint. The Bossier City Police Department's participation in "Click It or Ticket" is funded with federal grant money distributed through the Louisiana Highway Safety Commission.

This year's "Click It or Ticket" campaign includes more enforcement, advertisements, and public education to raise awareness of Louisiana's seatbelt laws.

Last year, officers issued over 20,000 seatbelt citations during the increased enforcement period. According to a survey that was conducted in 2012, a record high of 79 percent of drivers and front-seat passengers were using seat belts. Transportation officials say that 61 percent of people killed in crashes in Louisiana in 2011, weren't buckled up.
