Caddo Sheriff's Camp Swaps Computers for Canoes

Posted: Updated:
DESOTO PARISH, La. -

"We go out shooting rifles and canoeing," says camper Timmie Harris, 12, of the Caddo Sheriff's Camp. "[It's]pretty scary at first, but you get used to it."

In its 24th year, the camp recognizes at-risk boys from Caddo Parish for good behavior and academic achievement. It also introduces them to the scouting program.

Organizers say the camp gives kids something to do in their summer months. It keeps them busy, when they otherwise might not have anything productive to fill their time.

If they were not at the Garland Scout Ranch this week, campers Ryan Ansus and Matthew Stiles say they would likely fill their day at the computer mouse or the game controller.

Members of the Caddo Parish Sheriff's Office volunteer their time for the four day camp. They come in plain clothes, allowing these participants to see law enforcement officers in a different light.

"[They are] recognizing that we're human beings with- most of the time- kids just like them," says Lt. Michael McDaniel.

The 76 boys are aged 10 to 13. Most were nominated for this camp by their schools or churches. They're required to show a report card with good grades and good citizenship scores.

The sheriff's office covers costs with public donations.
