GEISMAR, La. -

State Police confirmed one person has died after a massive chemical plant explosion in Geismar this morning.

They made the announcement just before 1 p.m. near the Williams Olifens plant on La. 30, where an explosion and fire broke out around 8:30 a.m.

An LSP spokesperson said seven to eight people were injured in that explosion and taken to nearby hospitals. Baton Rouge General confirmed they received eight people to their burn unit from the explosion.

There's still no word on what caused the initial explosion, but State Police said the fire at the plant is out. He said HazMat units are doing a controlled burn on the substance which was burning, a type of rubber called ethylene propylene.

The 600 workers at the plant are being taken to staging areas where family and loved ones can pick them up. For more information on a specific worker's status call 1-866-380-2303.

Gov. Bobby Jindal scheduled a 1:30 p.m. press conference from the site of the explosion.
