Body found in Red River identified as 1 of 2 missing men

Posted: Updated:
MILLER COUNTY, Ark. -

The Miller County Sheriff's Office tells KTBS 3 News that the body found in the Red River Thursday morning is that of Bill Cooper.

Authorities say that a fisherman found Cooper's body floating in the Red River about 20 miles south of Texarkana.

Southwest Arkansas authorities have been searching for Bill Cooper and John Fairbanks since Friday, June 7 after their boat capsized. That incident happened around 3:00 Friday afternoon near the Red River boat ramp in Garland City. A couple of fishermen spotted Julia Lopez, 30, stranded on a sandbar and brought her to shore. When authorities arrived, Lopez told them she had been fishing with her dad, Bill Cooper, and her boyfriend, John Fairbanks when their boat capsized. Sheriff officials said that none of the boat occupants were wearing life jackets.

Boats from the Arkansas Game and Fish Commission as well as a private plane have been used the past few days to search for the men.
