Shreveport Ranks 20th Fastest Growing City

Posted: Updated:

Shreveport is one of the fastest growing cities in the nation... It's news that's surprising to most locals but it's information that comes from a study by NerdWallet.com, a consumer advocacy and financial literacy web site.

Shreveport is ranked the 20th fastest growing city in the nation. As much as we all would like for that to be true, local officials say they aren't so sure. Nerd Wallet's study used data in Shreveport from 2007 thru 2011.

Divya Raghavan is the analyst who conducted the study at Nerd Wallet. Raghavan said, "Shreveport is actually growing, the population has grown by 3 percent, employment rate has grown by 2 percent almost and median income has gone up by almost 8 percent." She went on to say that broad based growth in population, median household income and employment were factors used in the study.

Dick Bremer with the Greater Shreveport Chamber of Commerce disagrees. "When I became aware of the study that came out a couple of days ago, I was surprised. Based upon Census data that I'm aware of, growth has been very modest. In the one or one percent range." He says from 2007 until 2011 Haynesville Shale gave the area an economic boost but that just isn't accurate as a current snapshot.

John Grindley, the Executive Director of Cohab, a non profit shared workspace for entrepreneurs says we may not be growing but Shreveport is doing better at retention. "We're seeing a lot more people that aren't leaving, we're educating our college students and they're not going off to Texas and states, they're staying here. People are starting to realize that Shreveport is cool. I can make it in my own backyard."
