Massive pipe leak floods neighborhood

Posted: Updated:

A home was left under water after a utility pipe busted Saturday in Shreveport's Allendale community. Hundreds of gallons of water gushed from under a buckled sidewalk, flooding and closing streets. Firefighter's say four homes were affected in all, and a church had it's basement flooded.

"One of the trustees called and said the church is flooding. The streets flooding," Lillian Priest said. She's a member of Saint Mary Baptist Church and the Caddo School Board. The pipe burst just behind the church. Priest says the water rushed into its basement.

"We've not been able to get access to the full basement because of the water that's in the first portion of the basement," Priest said.

Meanwhile, Shreveport water and sewer workers rushed around the neighborhood in an effort to stop the water. Priest says it ran for about two hours. Broken pipes and flooding streets aren't unfamiliar to Shreveport. Similar scenes have occurred, but those that watched the water rise hope today's flood brings change.

"We hate to see things of this nature happen, but I think it makes, possibly, a swifter move in making sure some repairs and things are done as needed," Priest said. "Of course, as you can see, there is definitely a need."

Firefighters say they responded around 6 PM to flood zone. The water was eventually put under control. We tried to speak to city officials about this matter but failed to contact them.
