Long Beach will host Ripken tournament

Posted: Updated:

About 1,000 visitors are expected in Long Beach, Miss., when it hosts the 2013 Cal Ripken Southwest Regional baseball tournament.

Mayor Billy Skellie tells The Sun Herald the tournament should be a large economic boost to the community, and the city will distribute maps showing the many eateries, shops and other amenities the city has to offer, including a brand-new yogurt shop.

The tournament will be at the Long Beach Recreational Field. It will host at least 30 All-Star teams of 7- and 11-year-olds between July 18 and 22. Championship teams and runners-up will step up to the plate in the bracket from Texas, Arkansas, Louisiana and Mississippi.

Tournament director Danny Davis says he expects the tournament to have a huge impact on Gulfport, Long Beach and surrounding areas.
