Underage Drinking

Posted: Updated:

According to the latest data from the state of Louisiana, youth in the state consistently report higher alcohol use than teens in the rest of the nation. According to a survey by state officials, one-in-four 8th graders report drinking five or more alcoholic drinks in a two week period, which is 50% higher than the national rate.

For 12th graders, the picture is more startling, with nearly one-in-two reporting drinking alcohol in a 30 day period. And over the summer, law enforcement think those numbers probably go up even higher and they are on the lookout.

"Typically during the summer months our  patrols are centered around curfew violations and house parties and a lot of times parents are out of town and kids do decide to throw house parties. Those are some of the things we tend to see," says Cpl. Marcus Hines with the Shreveport Police Department.

If parents supplied alcohol to the teens, they can be charged with contributing to the delinquency of a minor.

When it comes to curfews, it is midnight in most areas of the Arklatex for minors.
