Judge Robert Burgess sentenced Cory Leone to 20 years of hard labor on Wednesday. Leone will get credit for time served but isn't eligible for parole until at least 85 percent of his sentence is served.

Leone was convicted last month for attempted manslaughter by a DeSoto Parish jury. The 25 year-old was originally charged with attempted second degree murder and attempted second degree kidnapping of Breanna Pearce.

In July 2012, Leone and Pearce were on their way home to Zwolle from the Horseshoe Casino after a night of celebrating Pearce's 21st birthday when Leone shot Pearce in the head and then shot himself in the head. Miraculously, both survived. Pearce suffered permanent blindness in her left eye; she was hospitalized for six days. Leone's recovery was a bit more extensive. The bullet that went into his brain affected his motor skills on the left side of his body. He had to undergo extensive rehabilitation to learn how to walk again and use his left arm among several other life-long complications.

At sentencing, Judge Burgess said that he felt that the prosecution produced more than enough evidence for the attempted second degree murder conviction but that he was satisfied with the reduced charge of attempted manslaughter.
