Summer School Truancy

Posted: Updated:

Each and every day Susie Smith and a team of  what you could call school investigators, also known as attendance officers, are tasked with the goal of finding the kids who don't bother to show up for class during summer school.

"We have to do a lot of researching ," says Larry Anderson who is also with the school attendance office.

On the day with met up with Smith and Anderson, Smith was trying to track down a 4th grader whose mother first reported that her daughter had pink eye  and couldn't attend class,  excuses Anderson says they hear all the time.

Caddo School Board member Ginger Armstrong says parents have to start taking some responsibility .

"If this process is not followed the district is penalized," says Armstrong.

The district spends  $1.5 Million on summer school programs. But on any given day of summer school nearly 20% of those enrolled don't show up for class.

Armstrong says the district gets penalized when students don't attend class by the state  and it also jeopardizes those students chances of  advancing to the next grade.

And according to district officials when students aren't in class your tax dollars are being spent on  seats that aren't being filled with students, the district must then spend millions of dollars to try and bring students up to grade level by placing them in  remediation classes during the normal school year.
