Mental evaluation ordered for Shannon Richardson

Texarkana, Texas -

A New Boston woman at the center of the ricin-laced letters case appeared in federal court on Thursday.

Shannon Richardson, 35, is accused of sending three letters laced with deadly poison to President Obama, New York Mayor Michael Bloomburg and his gun control group.

Her attorney, Tonda Curry, waived the detention hearing and requested a mental evaluation.
At issue is whether she is competent to stand trial.
Richardson is now in the custody of the U.S. Marshals and will soon be sent to a facility in Fort Worth or Missouri for the evaluation.
She has been charged with mailing a threatening communication.
Curry says Richardson has not been charged with anything having to do with ricin.

"My client absolutely firmly denies producing, baking or having anything to do with ricin," said Curry.

Richardson has not been formally indicted by a grand jury.
A child custody hearing was also held Thursday for Richardson's children.
Her ex-husband, David Guess, who lives in Georgia was given custody of all four children.
