LA lawmaker's video sparks concern over race and politics

Posted: Updated:
OPELOUSAS -

A Louisiana lawmaker's video goes viral and sparks a debate about race and politics.

Opelousas State Senator Elbert Guillory used a YouTube video to explain his reasons for switching back to the republican party.

Guillory was a republican, but switched to the democrats six years ago, when he ran for the state senate in a predominately black district. Now, he says it's time to return to the party of his ideals.

Guillory said democrats use welfare and other social programs as a means to control blacks. During the four minute video, he said he feels it's time to return to the party of his ideals.

Guillory posted the video Sunday, and it's already received more than half a million hits on YouTube.

Some say Guillory's party switch is pure politics. He's been mentioned as a possible candidate for Lieutenant Governor.
