Bead Town art exhibit open in Natchitoches

Posted: Updated:

Recycled Mardi Gras beads get a new life as part of a traveling art exhibit called Bead Town. Right now it is in Natchitoches.

Artist Stephan Wanger started creating the over sized art work six years ago with donated beads.

He partners with Louisiana cities and schools to create pieces picturing local and state traditions.

Wanger is from Germany but has submersed himself in the Louisiana culture.

"I believe we have something here that no place in the world has," said Wanger. "We have an art form here that's unique to Louisiana, made out of Mardi Gras Beads. And what a great tourism engine it could possibly be."

The art exhibit is also interactive. Wanger wants the public to help create a couple pieces to later travel with the show. Everyone, including children, is encouraged to help Stephan complete historic pieces of Natchitoches. Starting June 25th, workshops will be held Tuesdays through Fridays at Northwestern State University in South Hall. Click here to sign up for a workshop.
