Caddo Sheriff's Office offers bike safety tips

Posted: Updated:

Whether they're on a bike, scooter or skateboard, Caddo Sheriff's Safety Town Deputies want kids to see, hear and be seen. Those are most important road safety tips. Corporal April Wright-Kelly says kids must constantly have their eyes and ears focused on their surroundings while on the roads or sidewalks. She says to ride with the flow of traffic, watch out for cars in reverse, don't ride behind cars or blindly enter a roadway.

"If you are crossing the street on your bicycle, skateboard or scooter, make sure you look," Wright-Kelly said. "Make sure you look behind you so that you aren't crossing in front of a car. Make sure you cross at a corner."

Wright-Kelly says only kids ten and up should be allowed to ride on the streets.

"Kids that are under ten, you want them to stay on the sidewalk," she said. "They're not really paying attention. They're focused on riding their bikes. The older they get, they're more apt and aware of what their surrounding are."

She says a helmet should always be worn, no matter what a child is riding. It should rest on the brow and be snug. Wright-Kelly says drivers should also be more aware for children on or near the roads.

"Make sure you do the speed limit," she said. "Especially in these residential area. That's the worst thing that can happen, that you hit a kid because you are speeding or not paying attention."

Wright-Kelly says adult supervision should be present for children under ten and riding at night should be avoided. If so, kids shouldn't wear dark clothing and should outfitted with reflective materials.
