Posted: Updated:

Summer time is fun time in the water season. Lakes, rivers and swimming pools are often a big draw to people looking for fun and relaxation. Be sure your day in the sun is safe and learn how to reduce your risk.

Splashing, wading, and paddling. It must be a great day if you are in the water. A day at the beach, at a water park, by a lake, or in a pool can be a real treat on a hot day.

Splash Kingdom water park in Shreveport participated in an effort to establish a new world record. The intention- to set a Guinness world record for the world's largest swimming lesson. The water park was one of hundreds of locations to participate in this idea to raise awareness of water safety.

Terri Robertson of the Red River Swim club says the world's largest swim lesson.org is an organization that started about three years ago that brings awareness to the need for swim lessons. When we teach our kids not only do we need to learn how to swim we also need to be water smart that we teach them. We've got letters that go with water smart."

Sadly drowning is the second leading cause of unintentional injury death for children ages 1 to 14 years. Parents and care givers should learn CPR. For adults, children and infants.

The American Red Cross tells me the Shreveport Chapter has trained about 80 people as lifeguards this year. The next certification class is scheduled for July 12. Call Mike Burlson of the American Red Cross at 318-865-9545 for more information

And when it comes to water safety know the difference between a flotation device such as an inner tube or beach ball to an actual coast guard approved personal flotation device also known as a life jacket.

Jeff Hart brought his daughter to the swim lesson. He says "I think having swimming lessons, it's important for kids to safe around the water especially with us going into the summertime. And kids going to be around the water quite a bit."

Swimming lessons are a great idea for people of all ages. Instructors say that it is best for kids to become accomplished swimmers by the time they enter the third grade.
