LA Tech Athletic Director Bruce Van De Velde steps down

The Bulldogs athletic director Bruce Van De Velde announced Thursday that he will step down from his position, effective July 1st.   Van De Velde caught a lot of heat this year when the Louisiana Tech football team was left out of bowl season.  

The Bulldogs were 9-3 and set to be a BCS buster, but their 32 seniors missed out on the reward of a postseason and instead they watched 6 win teams playing in bowl games.  Although there's many sides to the story, Van De Velde caught the brunt of the Bulldog nation hostility.  

It hasn't been all bad for Van De Velde though who was instrumental is making hires that have put Bulldog athletics on the map.   Van De Velde is responsible for bringing in football coach Sonny Dykes in 2010 and head men's basketball coach Michael White in 2011, and the most recent hiring of Skip Holtz to lead the football team.   He's also credited with Tech's move from the WAC Conference to Conference USA, ironically effective 3 days after his final day on the job.  

But in the end, it seems as if the bowl blunder continues to overshadow the Van De Velde era at Louisiana Tech.  Van De Velde will stay with the university in a non-administrative role for the remainder of his contract that expires February 2014.  Deputy athletics director and senior woman advisor Mary Kay Hungate will serve as the interim Athletics Director until a replacement for Van De Velde is named.
