Slain toddler's mother says she prayed with suspected killer

Posted: Updated:
SHREVEPORT, La. -

Debbie Muskelly still cannot believe her three-year-old daughter, Rizcheir "Rere" Muskelly, is gone. The toddler was allegedly killed by her caretaker, Tarika Wilson, 33.

Muskelly says Wilson is a family friend, but the two grew close while serving time at Caddo Correctional Center.

"We prayed together," Muskelly says. "We cried together. You'd have never looked at Tarika like this."

Muskelly says she gave Wilson provisional guardianship after Wilson wrote her letter saying she wanted to look after the girls.

"She wrote me a letter and stated, 'Hey, God placed it on my heart to take care of your kids, all of your kids,'" Muskelly says.

Muskelly meant for Wilson to help her oldest daughter Kiki look after Rere and her two other siblings. The Muskellys, however, say Wilson took the girls in October and seldom let them know about their condition.

"She tried to keep them from me all the time, but I still found my ways to see them," Kiki Muskelly, 19, says.

Kiki Muskelly says she suspected abuse and reached out to multiple local and state agencies.

The Shreveport Police Department does have a civil complaint from Muskelly. Because Muskelly did not report suspected abuse or kidnapping to SPD, they say the courts would respond to her concerns.

The Louisiana Dept. of Children and Family Services does not comment on specific cases.

"I went months at a time without hearing from my children," Debbie Muskelly says. "She wouldn't accept my calls. She wouldn't write me back, wouldn't send me pictures."

Muskelly says she would send acquaintances by Wilson's home to check on the girls. She says she doesn't know why Wilson held onto the kids for so long.

She says she has lost one child too soon and will fight to get the other two back from state custody.

Tarika Wilson is currently in Caddo Correctional Center on a second degree murder charge.
