Arrest made in the city's latest homicide

Posted: Updated:

Authorities have now arrested a local man accused of murder in west Shreveport early Thursday morning.

Just after 3:30 a. m. on June 27, 2013, Shreveport Police responded to a call of a shooting in the 600 block of Central Street.  Upon officer's arrival at the scene, contact was made with members of the Shreveport Fire Department, who confirmed that a male adult victim had been shot at least once in the upper body while on the premises.  The man, identified as 58 year old Walter Howard of Shreveport, was transported to LSUHSC where he later succumbed to his injuries.

Shreveport Police Violent Crimes detectives arrived on scene immediately launching an investigation. Through their efforts, authorities gathered information linking 49 year old Gregory Johnson of Shreveport to the crime. It is believed that Johnson and Howard were engaged in a dispute that led up to the fatal shooting. During the dispute, Johnson reportedly arrived at Howard's residence armed with a handgun and fired numerous rounds through the homes front door after being denied entry.

Just before 9:00 p.m. Thursday evening, Agents with the U.S. Marshals Fugitive Task Force located Johnson who was hiding inside a closet in a home in the 1500 block of Hollywood Avenue.  Johnson was taken into custody without incident and now faces second degree murder charges.  Following interviews with detectives, Gregory Johnson was booked into the Shreveport City Jail. Bond in the matter has been set at $250,000.00.
