Shreveport's recent rash of homicides still down from 1993 peak

Posted: Updated:
SHREVEPORT, La. -

Corporal Clinton Grigsby says after patrolling Shreveport's district seven day year after year he knows these neighborhoods, the residents, and the problem spots.

"This one that we are pulling up to on the left side is usually a problem house," Grigsby says as he drives along his patrol route.

Grigsby says working in this beat- which includes the Allendale, Caddo Heights, and Queensborough neighborhoods, among others- can be difficult. In May alone, there were more than a hundred offenses written up, including 22 residential burglaries and 12 aggravated batteries.

"Some of the people in the neighborhood, those are the one that are going to tell us who are burglars are and who's causing the problems and everything else," Grigsby says.

Even with homicide rates at their lowest in four decades, SPD says people remember certain neighborhoods as they were at their worst. When the overall crime statistics no longer match the reputation, one headline making case will reinforce the negative perception.

"They're out there, they're on the front lines and they know what to look for," Cpl. Marcus Hines says. "They have training. They interact with the citizens. And so far, they've been really effective out as best they can."

SPD investigated 20 murders in each 2011 and 2012. That's down significantly from the peak, 86 in 1993.

So far, SPD says the city's seen 12 homicides this year.
