ArkLaTex In-Depth- Springhill Fire Trucks

Posted: Updated:
SPRINGHILL, La. -

The role of the firefighter first responder is a dangerous occupation. As we have seen recently even the most highly trained firemen may be injured or killed while performing their job. One local fire department recently added two new trucks to their force that should better serve the public and protect the firefighter.

Springhill has two new arrivals and the fire department is proud of these new additions. A full size ladder truck and a new pumper truck are now in use. These red machines are gleaming with chrome and warning lights and remain poised to break out from the firehouse if the need arises. Fire Chief Billy Raspberry Jr. has been instrumental in obtaining these trucks.

Raspberry says "We went out for bids we had two bids come in. Rosenbaur which is what this truck is, won the bid it was specked the way we like it."

The fire departments fire district 11 which covers more than 22 miles square miles in northern Webster parish has seen a reduction in the response times needed to arrive on scene.  The trucks have dropped  response time down from six to seven minutes down to two or three minutes on fire calls.  Plus there is the prospect of improving the fire rating and reducing insurance costs to residents of the area.  Chief Raspberry says" Hopefully a couple hundred dollars a year on their fire insurance is what we are hoping for judging by what we have looked up and researched this is what we have achieved."  And what about the addition of Springhill's first ladder truck?   Chief Raspberry tells KTBS they have used it three times. With man power limited during the day it better to have something easier to operate than having so many cumbersome ladders thrown out there.  Safety is the name of the game.  Springhill has also added another fire station and additional personnel, extra help for medical calls.  Firefighters ask that people use some common sense when burning in their yard. If the wind is high or there is a burn ban that they don't burn. Right now there is no burn ban.

Springhill should have the results of their new fire rating evaluation in late August.

We've been told by many veterans that they receive quality care at the V.A. hospital in Shreveport. But for some getting an appointment to see their caregivers is the challenge. According to our V.A., they do not have a problem getting patients seen quickly - and the numbers they report echo that conclusion. We’ve uncovered concerns, however, over how their numbers look so good - while patients are still waiting to be seen.“Certainly from my viewpoint here, as a veteran, as a physician, the c...

Ever since allegations that veterans died waiting for care came out of phoenix, we've all been asking, why, and how could an organization aimed at helping our servicemen and women foster an atmosphere where this has gone on for so long?
