Prescription drug overdoses increase in women

Posted: Updated:
SHREVEPORT, La. -

The Center for Disease Control said women are more likely to use prescription drugs than men. it said last week the number of women who have died because of a prescription drug overdose quadrupled from 1999 to 2010.

"It could be innocent. Somebody just needing something to not have anxiety or depression," said Gwen Day. She works with an average of 20 women a year at the Oakwood Home for Women.

She said Tuesday she's seen an increase in women with a prescription pill problem.

"It seems like a lot of people don't do that on purpose," Day said. "Maybe they had a surgery or some sort of physical need for the prescription drug or pain pills. They start taking those and get addicted to them."

Jennifer Adams with the council of alcoholism and drug abuse says the increase could be because of the availability of the pills.

"More people are being prescribed prescription pain killers than say 10 years ago," said Adams. "And a lot more people are using those prescription pain killers because it doesn't have the sigma like crack cocaine or methamphetamines. 'It was prescribed so it's OK, right?' And it's harder to see that you've become dependent on those."

Unfortunately, it's the users' families who are affected the most when someone is addicted to a drug.

"Children pay the biggest price from a parent with an addiction or an alcohol problem because they have the lack of a positive role model," said Adams. "They have the lack of a healthy environment."

With a rise in online classes, many educational institutions are asking the question, how can they maintain academic integrity in the digital age. More and more students are getting educated through online sources, to match courses to their busy schedules, avoid long commutes or to save money. "Well, people who are local to the Shreveport area, they have the option of coming in and actually taking the exam at an assigned time. They don't have to pay for the exam.
