Gated Communities Pose Threat for First Response

Posted: Updated:
SHREVEPORT, La -

There are dozens of gated communities around Shreveport providing security to residents in those areas. But Shreveport's finest say they could get in the way and take away precious minutes or seconds in the event of an emergency.

Shreveport Fire Chief Craig Mulford says gated communities around the city need a new device that will allow first responders into their neighborhoods in emergencies. "The time to find out that something isn't working is not when you need to get in the gate. There were cases where either the Shreveport Fire Department or the Shreveport Police Department had extended response times because the system that was in place on those gates did not operate properly."

Getting inside those troublesome gates added anywhere from 3 to 5 minutes to response times. And it's not just neighborhoods, businesses that use a gate are at risk as well. There are 113 gated areas in Shreveport alone. And 52 of those areas are residential. The new device works off of radio frequency, and Chief Mulford says that works perfectly. "We have radio's that works in every police car and every fire vehicle."

City Councilman Oliver Jenkins worked with first responders to make sure the gates are up to code. Jenkins says communities and businesses have until January to purchase the new device. "There are procedures that would eliminate some of the wear and tear on the gates, and they certainly don't want to be in a position where they'd have to go through a gate to get to somebody, which they would do if an emergency necessitated."

The radio frequency device can cost up to $1,500 dollars and would be paid for by gated communities or businesses.
