Sickle cell tournament in full swing

Posted: Updated:

The 37th Annual Sickle Cell Softball Tournament is well underway in Shreveport's Cargill and Southern Trace Parks. Sickle cell is an inherited disorder, mostly found in African Americans, that causes blood cells to form in an elongated shape instead of round. This shortens the cell's life, causes pain and makes those affected anemic. The tournament helps those suffering.

Around 150 softball teams from around the Ark-La-Tex, Mississippi and other states are in town. They're playing ball on 13 fields for a good cause. It's to raise money for the Northwest Louisiana chapter of the Sickle Cell Disease Association. Organizers hope to raise $40 to $50 thousand, and ay they're tournament is so popular because of the awesome talent.

Games are open to the public but there is a $5 fee for each car. Teams will play until one in the morning and then pick back up Sunday afternoon.
