ArkLaTex In-Depth: Know Your Numbers

Posted: Updated:
SHREVEPORT, La. -

Are you tired of those love handles?

Do you feel tired when you get to work? Not just when you leave for the day?

It may be time to tweak your diet and start learning your numbers.

Nutritionists say there are three main tests you need to request from your doctor. The first being blood pressure. When getting tested, remember that 120/80 is normal.

Get your cholesterol checked out. It should be no higher than 200. And, don't forget your weight. When combined with your height, a body mass index should fall between about 18-25 to be considered healthy.

LSU registered dietitian Kimberly Donahue said getting an A1C blood sugar test for diabetes is another important test that's often overlooked.

"Diabetes is now considered to be an epidemic really worldwide. There are 80 million pre-diabetics in America, so it really is exploding in this nation," said Donahue.

As of 2012, the Department of Health and Hospitals counted 10 percent of Louisiana's population as being diabetic.

Nutritionist and author Mark McDonald said once you know your numbers then you can fix what's not working for you.

"The first step is you've got to find out your score and the second step is you have to actually eat more fruits and veggies. The third step is wherever you have a deficit you need to fill the gap with the right supplementation," said McDonald.

This is especially true if you're on the verge of developing diabetes.

"If you're pre-diabetic, there are some simple things that you can do. Losing 5-7 percent of your body weight, if weight loss is needed, cannot only lower your blood sugar significantly, but it can also lower your blood pressure," said Donahue.
