Providence House receives more state funds this year over last

Posted: Updated:

Part of the near $4 million vetoed from the state budget by Governor Bobby Jindal was domestic violence funding. But the domestic violence program in Caddo Parish saw an increase in money.

Providence House received $ 225,656.30 for the 2013-14 fiscal year; that's up from $ 184,270.98 last year.

Simone Hennesee does not really know why they got more money this year, but said it is welcomed. Especially after the Providence House saw about $50,000 cut back in December.

"We're still down about $25,000 from where we were the previous year, but you know something? We're thrilled to get it," said Hennesee, the executive director of the Providence House.

Hennesee said more than 500 people, both parents and children, received help through Providence House's domestic violence program last year.

Working with a smaller budget is hard, but Hennesee said they will make it work.

"We have no option," said Hennesee. "We're going to take everyone in whether or not we have the actual dollars are here. We will not turn away any domestic violence survivor."

Unfortunately, Hennesee does not think the tough financial times will get better any time soon.

"We are anticipating that public dollars will continue to be reduced as the sequester is happening and while paying off the debt is important to our country to do," she said. "It does impact us but we've been fortunate enough to have a generous community."

The Department of Children and Family Services now provides the money for domestic violence programs around the state. A post on their website said for the first time population, area served and quality of care has been considered when allocating the money.

The Providence House relies on community support to stay in operation. Click here to learn how to donate.
