Local ministries team up to provide school supplies for area children

Posted: Updated:
BOSSIER CITY, La. -

Nearly 30,000 children in the Shreveport-Bossier area live in poverty, and the goal of one local organization is to ease the financial burden of sending kids back to school.

"I began to talk to people about the idea and it just became contagious."

It's called Faith Moving Mountains, an organization made up of several area churches that works to ensure Bossier City kids are equipped with everything they need to make back-to-school a success.

"All that these parents have to do is come in, grab up a couple of bags, one will have school supplies and one will have uniforms for their children in it," says founder, Angie Tejada.

Tejada says people are often afraid to speak up and say they need a little extra help and that's where their group steps in.

"People are hurting and people need a hand, and we as a community, need to step out and do that."

Now in its 2nd year, the mission is made possible through donations from various churches, businesses and the public.

"There's a huge need and to me, just to know that we can meet that need as a whole and no one person really gets credit because so many people come together. So many churches, so many people in the community. It's just a neat thing to see," Tejada says.

New this year, is the 'fast track' aspect of the program. These are bags that are already designated for specific children that area schools have indentified as needing additional help with back-to-school items.

Right now, the organization is only able to help children in Bossier City, but Tejada says she hopes the growth this year is a sign that eventually the group will be able to help students in other parts of Bossier Parish and Shreveport, as well.

The South Bossier region of Faith Moving Mountains expects to help about 500 hundred kids this year, from kindergarten to 12th grade.

The mission also has a North Bossier location that assists children and families in that area.
