Parents check sex offender registry after 6-year-old's murder

Posted: Updated:

Krystal Wibben, a mother of three, says she last checked the sex offender registry when she got a postcard about an offender moving to her neighborhood. When she pulled up the website, Wibben found he was not the only sex offender near her home.

"There weren't too many around where my kids play," Wibben says. "There were a few around my neighborhood, and I did take note of where they are."

When Wibben looked at the listings Wednesday, she recognized a familiar face.

Child safety experts say that's usually the case in juvenile sex crimes. 93 percent of suspects know the alleged victim and his or her parents.

"Trust is huge," says Gingerbread House's Jessica Miller. "That is how offenders gain access to children. Offenders are great manipulators. They gain the family's trust and then that means access to the child."

While some offenders will avoid arrest, Miller says checking the registry is often the best preventative measure.

"The statistics show for every one child that comes forward, an offender may have eight, nine, [or] ten victims that have gone unnoticed," Miller says. "So, that it is so important for the community- adults around children- to get to know children and also report abuse."

"As a parent, I think it's part of our responsibility to look out for our kids," Wibben says. "I'm going to try to keep my kids safe every way I can."

To check the registered sex offenders near a given address, visit the Louisiana State Police website.
