Shreveport-Bossier could see a film industry boom

Posted: Updated:

The local film industry has been flat so far for 2013. Bossier City film liaison Pam Glorioso says that's changing. At least three Shreveport-Bossier productions are scheduled for later this year.

"A few major films within the range of $10 to $14 million to be shot here," Glorioso said.

That's because film production in South Louisiana is booming once again. Glorioso says our stages are need because others in the state are booked up.

"The studios are filled. They're maxed out in Baton Rouge and New Orleans," Glorioso said. "Fortunately, for us they're coming back up and looking at Shreveport-Bossier. A few years ago, this wasn't possible because the inventory wasn't there in those cities. It is now, but of course, we have a better inventory of stages."

These productions are expected to create several jobs, which could be filled by locals or transplants from elsewhere.

"Well, what it brings is a crew that is assigned to each film," Glorioso said. "A crew can consist of 80, 150 or 200 people on a large feature film. These are people that can hopefully live in the Shreveport-Bossier area or live within the State of Louisiana."

Glorioso says Louisiana is attractive to filmmakers because of state incentives. Production companies can get a 30 percent state tax incentive for filming and even more if they hire locals.

"If they hire additional personnel that are Louisiana residences, there's an additional five percent," Glorioso said. "So, a film can be looking at as much as 35 percent in tax credit for work done in the State of Louisiana."

That tax credit can apply to purchases of both goods and services. While details can't be released now, Millennium Studios and Glorioso have confirmed that a major, big budget film is in the works to be produced in Shreveport-Bossier. More information on that film is expected in the coming months.
