Getaway to Toledo Bend

Posted: Updated:
TOLEDO BEND -

It's Getaway Friday and we headed south to one of the best places to fish. The 5th largest lake in the country.

Toledo Bend is packed with roaming deer and eagles. Those two things would be enough for people to live here but throw in an 18 hold golf course, a first class resort, condo's with some incredible views, luxury homes on the water and no wonder why so many baby boomers are attracted to Toledo Bend. But it didn't' start out this way.

Beginning after World War II, Texas and Louisiana really coveted the water from the Sabine River and the potential vast industry that a large lake would attract.

One local woman remembers what that was like; before the roads, sewer and the support needed for the industry. It was a very rural area and very deprived at that time. But, after 18 years, the dam was built. The lake opened in 1968 and became a world class fishing hole but the timber and other industry never showed up and Toledo Bend floundered.

Today, there are over 8000 retirement homes on the lake.

Throw in those deer and those eagles and those other birdies, and you find yourself in the middle of one of the best places in the country to be.
