Explo to stay in operations at Camp Minden

Posted: Updated:
BATON ROUGE, La -

Explo Systems will be allowed to remain in operation in Louisiana following a settlement with state police.

The license to operate at Camp Minden will carry some stipulations that still must be reviewed by a state district court judge in Baton Rouge. The stipulations, yet to be released, were lengthy according to one court employee.

"Explo is still in operation,'' said Lt. Julie Lewis, state police public affairs officer. "However, we have submitted several parameters that we should get back in 72 hours."

The settlement came during a Tuesday hearing in a suit brought by Explo executives to keep the company's licenses. The state police had yanked Explo's licenses in May.

After a Camp Minden explosion last fall, the company was found to have millions of pounds of improperly stored material. It took authorities months to remove or properly store the explosives.

State District Judge Janice Clark, who has allowed Explo to remain in operation pending Tuesday's hearing, must review the settlement.

Before the afternoon settlement, Judge Clark had been hearing arguments from key managers of Explo who had sued to keep the company's licenses. The plaintiffs still face criminal charges in Webster Parish for a variety of allegations, including unlawful storage of explosives and failure to keep proper inventory.

The company had a multimillion-dollar military contract to dismantle military propellant charges.
