AHTD makes plans to widen Highway 82 Magnolia bypass

Posted: Updated:
Magnolia, Ark. -

A statewide plan to widen Highway 82 in Arkansas could start in Columbia County.

Construction would start at the intersection on 79 North and Highway 82 and end near county road 525, going east to Eldorado.

Highway 82 would be widened for about 4.3 miles.

Four 12-foot lanes and one 11-foot passing lane are proposed for the entire length of the project.

While the highway project will reach several hundred feet beyond the roadway, some landowners say they welcome the change.

"It means we will now have a place that is safe, it's going to have good access and it will make a tremendous difference," said Alex Sheshunoff, Magnolia, Arkansas landowner.

The project is expected to begin in 2015 and take about 2 years to complete.

It will cost about $12 to $15 million.

Federal highway funds will cover 80 percent of the cost, with the state providing 20 percent.n
